New Delhi, Sep 8 (NationPress) The discussions surrounding the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA) commenced here on Monday, with both parties aiming to finalize negotiations before the looming year-end deadline. This initiative comes in the wake of US tariff issues that have introduced significant uncertainties into global trade, as reported by official sources.

The results of this negotiation round are vital for determining subsequent steps, as both parties evaluate the potential to resolve ongoing deadlocks on critical issues.

After the negotiating session, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to meet with Maros Sefcovic, the European Commission's Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, who will be visiting India on September 12.

Progress in negotiations accelerated following a phone conversation on September 4 between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European leaders, including Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, who emphasized the necessity to wrap up discussions by the year's end.

The upcoming 13th and 14th negotiation rounds, set to take place in Brussels starting October 8, will center on significant topics such as technical trade barriers, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, market access, rules of origin, and public procurement. Both sides have also made strides in assessing one another's proposals on services and investments, which were exchanged in July.

India has asserted that agricultural and dairy products are vital for the livelihoods of its farmers and should be excluded from the free trade agreement. Conversely, the EU seeks entry into the Indian market for automobiles and alcoholic beverages.

In addition, India is prepared to engage with the US for a mutually advantageous multi-sector bilateral trade agreement, ensuring the protection of its core interests in sensitive sectors like dairy, agriculture, fisheries, and MSMEs, according to official sources.

India remains dedicated to enhancing two-way trade while considering the interests of these sectors, pursuing a fair, equitable, and balanced trade framework that emphasizes reciprocity.

Furthermore, India and Qatar may finalize the terms of reference for their bilateral FTA in early October. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal might visit Qatar in the first week of October, should the terms of reference be finalized, as per sources.
