New Delhi, Sep 26 (NationPress) A political upheaval has unfolded in India following US President Donald Trump's declaration of a 100% tariff on branded and patented pharmaceutical imports, set to commence on October 1, unless companies start manufacturing within the United States.

In a strong rebuttal, UP Minister Narendra Kashyap emphasized that India's strength stems from its leadership. “No decision by Trump can undermine India, as we have a robust Prime Minister in Narendra Modi. He has tackled every challenge, both domestic and international, and has consistently worked to surmount them,” he stated.

Conversely, Opposition figures have voiced significant apprehensions about the move and its potential repercussions on India's pharmaceutical sector. Congress leader Udit Raj labeled the announcement a “shock.”

“India’s medicine exports are substantial. Until now, the most reassuring aspect was that medicines weren't subjected to tariffs, as the US also relies on affordable drugs. But this news feels like a jolt. What is happening?”

“America treats India like a football, kicking it whenever it pleases. Our Prime Minister Modi isn’t even responding. A 100% tariff could spell disaster for our medicine manufacturers,” he cautioned.

Congress MP Sukhdev Bhagat challenged both President Trump’s integrity and Prime Minister Modi’s inaction. “The credibility of the US President is now highly questionable. Modi himself regards him as a friend, yet Trump imposes a 100% tariff on pharma. What is Modi ji doing? Is he genuinely concerned about the Indian economy? Why is there no clear response? Every day brings a new statement; this feels like a musical chairs game,” he remarked.

Earlier, President Trump revealed the tariff on branded or patented pharmaceutical products on Truth Social: “Starting October 1st, 2025, we will impose a 100% Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America. 'IS BUILDING' will be defined as, 'breaking ground' and/or 'under construction.' Thus, there will be no Tariff on these Pharmaceutical Products if construction has commenced.”

Given that India is one of the globe's largest exporters of generic and branded drugs, President Trump’s decision is poised to have significant economic and geopolitical ramifications for the nation.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize that while the tariff poses a significant challenge, India's resilient pharmaceutical sector has the potential to adapt. The government must respond effectively to protect our economic interests while fostering international relations. This situation highlights the importance of strategic planning in navigating global trade dynamics.
