New Delhi, Sep 16 (NationPress) India and the United States convened a high-level official meeting in the capital on Tuesday, aiming to expedite the negotiations for a trade agreement that would benefit both nations. A delegation from the office of the United States Trade Representative, spearheaded by Chief Negotiator Brendan Lynch, arrived in India to engage in talks regarding the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement alongside a team of Indian officials, directed by Special Secretary of Commerce Rajesh Agrawal.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry post-meeting, it was noted, “Recognizing the ongoing significance of bilateral trade between India and the US, our discussions were constructive and future-oriented, covering various facets of the trade deal. We have resolved to accelerate efforts for a swift conclusion of a mutually advantageous trade agreement.”
As per sources from the Commerce Ministry, discussions about trade are occurring on multiple fronts, with the next steps to be determined following dialogues with Lynch.
Both teams are approaching trade matters with a constructive mindset, prepared to address all unresolved issues regarding the trade agreement. Some discussions fall within the diplomatic domain, involving the Ministry of External Affairs as well.
Lynch's visit arrives amid rising expectations for a trade deal, spurred by optimistic remarks from US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a period of tension.
On September 9, Trump expressed on Truth Social that negotiations were ongoing and conveyed confidence in reaching a successful resolution for both nations. He referred to PM Modi as a “great friend” and indicated he would be in communication with him.
In response, PM Modi remarked on Trump's post, stating, “I am optimistic that our trade discussions will unlock the vast potential of the India-US partnership.” He also expressed eagerness for dialogue with Trump.
Nominee for US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, informed a Senate panel last week that India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is anticipated to visit Washington, DC, where he will meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
In the meantime, India has seen its merchandise trade deficit shrink to $26.49 billion in August, down from $27.35 billion in July.
Despite global uncertainties and trade policy challenges, Indian exporters have performed admirably, indicating that government policies are yielding positive results.
