Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's Visit to Bangladesh Amid Rising Tensions Concerning Hindu Atrocities

New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is preparing for a visit to Dhaka on Monday amidst escalating tensions surrounding the treatment of the Hindu community in the region. He is expected to conduct Foreign Office Consultations with his Bangladeshi counterpart Md Jashim Uddin.
This visit is occurring against a backdrop of increasing alarm over alleged atrocities faced by the Hindu minority under the Mohammad Yunus administration, including the recent arrest of a notable Hindu monk, Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Moreover, this trip signifies the first high-ranking diplomatic interaction from New Delhi to Dhaka following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 and her subsequent relocation to India after widespread anti-government protests shook Bangladesh.
Vikram Misri's visit aims to engage in Foreign Office Consultations, a platform designed to tackle bilateral matters and encourage dialogue. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the meeting last week, highlighting India's dedication to addressing the escalating challenges posed by its eastern neighbor.
This development follows a prior meeting in September between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Advisor Md Touhid Hossain during the UN General Assembly in New York. That discussion, marking the first high-level engagement post-Hasina's ouster, focused on enhancing bilateral ties amidst a tense atmosphere.
India has voiced deep alarm regarding the uptick in extremist rhetoric, rising instances of violence, and provocations targeting the Hindu community in Bangladesh. Misri's visit is anticipated to tackle these urgent matters and seek pathways to stabilize bilateral relations during a period of considerable unrest.
Hindus globally have expressed shock over various attacks on their community and other minorities by extremist factions in Bangladesh.
"We are troubled by the rise in extremist rhetoric, the increasing episodes of violence, and provocations. These occurrences cannot merely be brushed off as media exaggerations. We urge Bangladesh to take comprehensive measures for the protection of all minorities," stated the MEA previously.
