New Delhi, July 11 (NationPress) To enhance operational efficiency and automate the maintenance of rolling stock, Indian Railways has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) for the deployment of a Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS) aimed at improving train safety.
The MVIS is an advanced, AI and ML-driven technology solution that operates on wayside, capturing high-resolution images of the under-gear of moving trains and automatically identifying any hanging, loose, or missing components.
Upon detecting discrepancies, the system provides real-time alerts to ensure swift responses and preventive measures, as noted in an official statement.
The MoU was officially signed by Sumit Kumar, Director (Project and Development) of the Railway Board, and Jawahar Lal, GGM (Mechanical) of DFCCIL at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi.
In a pivotal move towards embracing state-of-the-art technologies, DFCCIL will be tasked with the procurement, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of four MVIS units.
This groundbreaking system represents a first for Indian Railways and is anticipated to markedly enhance train operation safety, decrease manual inspection efforts, and mitigate potential accidents or service interruptions.
“This initiative is also in line with IR's broader mission to integrate modern, intelligent systems into the railway ecosystem. The signing of this MoU is expected to pave the way for digital transformation in rail safety, building a future-ready rail infrastructure,” stated the ministry.
The MVIS will fortify train safety, diminish manual checks, and avert service disruptions.
In related news, Indian Railways has distributed over 9,000 appointment letters in the first quarter of the financial year 2025-26 (Q1 FY26) and aims to provide more than 50,000 jobs by the end of this fiscal year.
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have been proactively conducting extensive recruitment drives to fill various roles. Since November 2024, the RRBs have facilitated Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) for over 1.86 crore candidates nationwide across seven different recruitment notifications.
