New Delhi, June 25 (NationPress) India is making a remarkable return to space, Jai Hind, stated astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, as he prepares for his groundbreaking mission to be the first Indian to arrive at the International Space Station this Wednesday.
After several postponements, Shukla is poised for liftoff at 2:31 a.m. EDT (12 noon IST) from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, utilizing the latest SpaceX Dragon spacecraft aboard the Falcon 9 rocket.
“India is making a remarkable return to space, Jai Hind,” Shukla announced on X just moments before the mission launch.
“The Dragon’s hatch is secured, all communication and suit checks are finalized, the seats are adjusted, and the Ax-4 crew is prepared for takeoff!” he added.
Previously, Shukla expressed heartfelt gratitude towards his wife.
“A heartfelt thanks to Kamna for being such a supportive partner. Without you, this journey would not be possible, and more importantly, it wouldn’t hold any significance,” Shukla shared in an Instagram post.
He also posted a poignant photograph of their goodbye through a glass wall.
Shukla extended his appreciation to everyone “involved in this mission for their unwavering support.”
This mission, organized by Axiom Space in partnership with NASA and SpaceX, showcases a diverse international crew and represents a significant advancement in commercial and global space exploration.
Shukla, who will take on the role of pilot alongside Commander Peggy Whitson from the US, will become the second Indian to venture into space, following Rakesh Sharma’s flight in 1984.
The crew also includes Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary, both serving as mission specialists. Once aboard the ISS, Shukla will conduct innovative experiments concerning food and nutrition in space.
“All systems appear ready for Wednesday’s launch of @Axiom_Space’s Ax-4 mission to the @Space_Station, with a 90% favorable weather forecast for liftoff. The webcast begins at 12:30 a.m.,” SpaceX announced on X ahead of the launch.
Upon reaching the ISS, Shukla will carry out groundbreaking experiments focused on food and space nutrition and will investigate the impacts of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae—a nutrient-rich, promising food source for future space missions.
