New Delhi, June 26 (NationPress) After an extensive wait of 41 years, Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla successfully docked at the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, marking a historic moment as he becomes the first Indian to arrive at the orbiting laboratory.
This achievement signifies India’s first astronaut in space since 1984. Born in Lucknow, Shukla is now the second Indian to venture into space, following Rakesh Sharma’s historic flight.
The Axiom Space’s mission -4, which includes Shukla and three other astronauts from the US, Poland, and Hungary, successfully docked at the Harmony module at 6:30 a.m. ET (4:00 p.m. IST).
The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, named ‘Grace’, is transporting Ax-4 Commander Peggy Whitson, Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, and Mission Specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Tibor Kapu.
“Docking confirmed!” announced SpaceX in a post on the social media platform X.
The crew launched to the ISS at 2:31 a.m. EDT (12 noon IST), from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard the new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket.
“Hello everyone, namaskar from space. I’m overjoyed to be here with my fellow astronauts. What an exhilarating ride it was. My only thought while seated in the capsule was: let’s go!” said Group Captain Shukla.
“As the ride commenced, you get pushed back in your seat. It was an incredible experience. And then suddenly, you’re floating in a vacuum,” he reflected on his space journey.
“I’m learning like a baby; it’s a new experience to walk and eat in space,” he remarked.
Previously, he mentioned that this mission symbolizes “the journey of India’s human space flight.”
Shukla has also brought along carrot halwa, moong dal halwa, and mango nectar to satisfy his cravings for homemade food while in space.
