Indore, Jan 2 (NationPress) Amid ongoing uncertainty regarding the number of fatalities linked to the consumption of contaminated water in Indore, senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Urban Affairs Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced on Friday that he would provide a precise count on Saturday.

During his visit to Bhagirathpura, the locality affected by the contaminated water crisis that has claimed several lives and left over 200 individuals hospitalized, the Minister declined to answer questions from the media.

When pressed for details about the exact death toll, he stated, "I will disclose the precise number of casualties at a press conference tomorrow (Saturday)."

Later, when journalists inquired about the state government’s actions concerning the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), Vijayvargiya refrained from commenting.

He explained, "An inquiry committee was set up by the Chief Minister, and actions may have been taken based on its report. I am unaware of the committee's findings, hence I cannot comment on the Chief Minister's decisions."

Significantly, the Madhya Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, has suspended two high-ranking officials from the IMC, including Additional Commissioner Rohit Sisonia.

The in-charge superintendent engineer of the Public Health Department, Sanjeev Srivastava, has also been suspended, while Indore Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav has been transferred immediately.

The Chief Minister emphasized on X that negligence in the Bhagirathpura incident caused by contaminated drinking water would not be tolerated, and strict measures are being implemented.

Later in the evening, CM Yadav convened a virtual meeting with Mayors from all 16 civic bodies in the state, Chairpersons, district collectors, and Municipal Commissioners, issuing essential directives. Senior officials from various departments, including Health and Urban Affairs, participated in the two-hour meeting.

Point of View

The situation in Indore highlights significant challenges regarding public health management and accountability. The swift action taken by the Madhya Pradesh government demonstrates a response to public outcry, but it also raises questions about the systemic issues that allowed such a crisis to occur in the first place. Ensuring safe drinking water is a fundamental responsibility of the government, and the incident underscores the need for rigorous oversight and preventive measures.
