Tehran/New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) Mohammad Fathali, Iran's Ambassador to India, conveyed Tehran's sincere appreciation to the Indian government for its principled and steadfast support during the voting process against a resolution that was ultimately approved by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) at its 39th special session on Friday.

"I extend my sincere gratitude to the Govt. of India for its principled and firm support of the I.R. of Iran at the UNHRC, including opposing an unjust and politically motivated resolution. This stance reflects India’s commitment to justice, multilateralism, and national sovereignty," Fathali shared on X.

The resolution was adopted with a vote tally of 25 in favor, 7 against, and 14 abstentions. It strongly condemned the violent crackdown on peaceful protests, which resulted in the deaths of thousands, including children, and many injuries, along with the arrest of thousands linked to the nationwide protests that began on December 28.

The UNHRC's resolution renewed the mandate of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran for two years, while extending the Special Rapporteur's mandate on the human rights situation in Iran for one year. It also called for an immediate investigation into the repression of nationwide protests that started on December 28, 2025, according to a statement from the UNHRC.

The resolution urged the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to respect, protect, and fulfill its human rights obligations and to implement all necessary measures to halt and prevent extrajudicial killings, arbitrary deprivation of life, enforced disappearances, sexual and gender-based violence, arbitrary arrests, and torture, especially against peaceful protesters.

Last week, India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar had a conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi regarding the evolving situation in the region.

"Received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. We discussed the evolving situation in and around Iran," EAM Jaishankar shared on X after their talk.

This discussion occurred shortly after New Delhi issued another advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travel to Iran due to recent developments.

"In light of ongoing developments in Iran, Indian nationals are again strongly advised to refrain from traveling to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice," read the advisory from the Indian government.

Earlier, on January 5, India had already cautioned its citizens against non-essential travel to Iran due to the recent situation.

"Indian citizens and PIOs currently in Iran should exercise caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, and stay updated through news and the Embassy of India in Tehran's website and social media channels," stated an advisory from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Moreover, Indian nationals residing in Iran on resident visas are encouraged to register with the Indian Embassy if they have not done so already.
