Mumbai, June 27 (NationPress) The chief of Mumbai BJP and Minister of Cultural Affairs, Ashish Shelar, stated on Friday that while it is the right of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray to hold morchas, it is crucial to understand that Marathi is essential in Maharashtra, whereas Hindi remains optional. He emphasized that it was the BJP that elevated Marathi to the status of a Classical Language.
His comments were in response to Shiv Sena(UBT) MP Sanjay Raut who mentioned that a unified protest against the introduction of Hindi as a third language in Marathi and English schools for grades 1 to 5 would feature Uddhav and Raj Thackeray.
Shelar remarked, “In a democracy, everyone is entitled to express their views. Ultimately, it is the police that will decide on granting permission for the proposed morcha. We are open to dialogue and advise against falling prey to misconceptions.”
He further asserted, “The stance of the Marathi populace is unmistakable. Marathi is mandatory in this state. The BJP staunchly supports the Marathi language. Thanks to both the BJP and the Central government, Marathi has been recognized as a noble language. Hindi is merely an optional language. It is essential to refrain from spreading misunderstandings, whether intentionally or unintentionally. The truth must be conveyed to the people: Marathi is mandatory, while Hindi is optional.”
Shelar also took a jab at Uddhav Thackeray’s anti-Hindi position, reminding him that the three-language policy under the National Education Policy 2022 was introduced during his tenure as chief minister.
“The government led by Uddhav Thackeray had endorsed the report from the expert committee regarding Hindi,” Shelar added.
He continued, “We also urge Raj Thackeray’s party to remember that the Congress had proposed the introduction of Hindi as part of the three-language policy during that time. Even Sharad Pawar, from the Uddhav Thackeray-led coalition, had supported this decision,” he noted.
State BJP media chief Navnath Ban also criticized Uddhav Thackeray for his anti-Hindi stance, pointing out that during his tenure as chief minister in February 2022, he officially accepted the 'NEP' Task Force report.
“This report clearly indicates that the trilingual policy should commence from the first grade, incorporating Hindi as the third language, which was also agreed upon. So why is the Uddhav faction now protesting against this policy? Is it not hypocritical to complain about a decision they themselves endorsed?” he questioned.
“This is not a genuine movement but a spectacle aimed at deceiving the public. Approving the trilingual policy while in power and then protesting against 'Hindi imposition' after leaving office is characteristic of the Uddhav faction! How many U-turns will Uddhavji perform?” he quipped while targeting Uddhav Thackeray.
