New Delhi, May 13 (NationPress) In a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing the river transport industry in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has inaugurated its new office at Srinagar’s Transport Bhawan, as confirmed by government officials on Tuesday.
This office, facilitated by the J&K government, commenced operations on Tuesday and will serve as the nucleus for all Inland Water Transport (IWT) initiatives undertaken by the Authority in the region, stated the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
The ministry further disclosed that IWAI has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Jammu and Kashmir government to enhance river navigation facilities across three national waterways within the territory—NW-26 (River Chenab), NW-49 (River Jhelum), and NW-84 (River Ravi).
Development activities will now commence under the MoU’s framework, including the establishment of floating jetties at ten sites within Jammu and Kashmir, improvement of navigational fairways through necessary dredging, installation of night navigational aids, and continuous hydrographic surveys to ensure the safe operation of vessels on these waterways.
This progress aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to transform waterways into a vital growth engine for the nation.
Through proactive measures such as the development of IWT terminals and supporting infrastructure, IWAI is dedicated to harnessing the vast potential of the nation’s rivers. The collaboration between IWAI and the Jammu and Kashmir government is a pivotal step that is poised to foster eco-tourism in the region while invigorating the local economy.
In a related achievement, IWAI recorded a remarkable 145.5 million tonnes of cargo transported via the country’s national waterways during the fiscal year 2024-25.
This unprecedented cargo movement marks an increase in total waterway traffic from 24 to 29 over the year.
Cargo transport along National Waterways surged from 18.10 MMT to 145.5 MMT between FY14 and FY25, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.86%.
In FY25, traffic movement recorded a year-on-year growth of 9.34% compared to FY24.
Comprehensive infrastructure improvements, including IWT terminals, night navigation capabilities, and navigational locks, are being developed along the National Waterways. These initiatives are expected to significantly enhance cargo movement, promoting a more efficient and sustainable mode of transportation.
