Jaipur, April 3 (NationPress) Rajasthan's Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma declared on Friday that enhancing waterway connectivity for the transportation and export of goods produced within the state ranks as a critical priority for the government. He urged officials to compile a thorough report to facilitate the progress of the proposed Jawai–Luni–Rann of Kutch National Waterway (NW-48).
During a meeting held at the Chief Minister’s Office regarding National Waterway-48, Sharma instructed the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and IIT Madras to execute a comprehensive evaluation of the project’s technical and financial viability, alongside a comparative analysis of anticipated vessel traffic for cargo transport.
It is noteworthy that under Sharma's leadership, the state government entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IWAI on October 27, 2025, aimed at the development of NW-48.
Professor K. Murali from IIT Madras presented an in-depth report on the advancement and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Sharma asserted that once operational, the National Waterway would greatly benefit both industries and traders in Rajasthan, as well as in neighboring states, by facilitating seamless cargo transportation.
He highlighted that the initiative would lay a solid groundwork for the state's comprehensive development, stimulate trade activities, and significantly lower logistics expenses. Furthermore, he remarked that the operationalization of NW-48 would allow for uninterrupted cargo transit to the Arabian Sea through the Rann of Kutch.
Spanning across Rajasthan and Gujarat, this waterway is projected to streamline the transport of essential commodities including petrochemicals, minerals, cement, chemicals, and various industrial products.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary V.
