Slain dacoit Jagan Gurjar was allegedly murdered inside Ajmer High-Security Jail on Monday, 30 June 2026, and a court has since granted his younger brother Pappu Gurjar permission to attend the funeral under heavy police escort. The killing has triggered a family protest, a murder case registration, and a memorandum to Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma alleging a larger conspiracy behind the death.

Court Grants Funeral Permission Under Heavy Guard

Pappu Gurjar, himself an inmate at Ajmer High Security Jail, had filed an application seeking permission to perform his brother's last rites. The court approved the request after hearing the prison administration's submission. On the day of the funeral, Pappu will be escorted by a heavy police contingent to the family's ancestral village in Rajasthan's Dholpur district.

Circle Officer (CO) Manish Badgurjar confirmed that Jagan Gurjar's family members are staging a sit-in protest and have conveyed their demands to senior police officials. He added that discussions with the family are ongoing.

How the Killing Unfolded Inside the Jail

According to prison officials, Jagan Gurjar and the prime accused, Vishnu — an undertrial in the high-profile Kuldeep Jaghina murder case from Bharatpur — were housed in the same barrack. Around 3 pm on Monday, when the barrack was opened as part of the daily routine, Vishnu stepped out with other inmates while Jagan was found inside in an unconscious state. Prison staff rushed to the spot and summoned doctors, who declared him dead. The body was subsequently shifted to the mortuary at Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Hospital in Ajmer, where security has since been heightened.

A towel recovered from the crime site has been seized as key evidence. Ajmer Civil Lines Police have registered a murder case on the basis of a complaint filed by the prison administration and have commenced their investigation.

Investigation Under Way; Post-Mortem Supervised by Medical Board

On Tuesday, investigators recorded statements from Deputy Jail Superintendent Bhanwar Singh and other prison personnel who were on duty at the time of the incident. The crime site was also inspected. Officials stated that further action will depend on the post-mortem findings and other forensic evidence. The post-mortem examination is being conducted under the supervision of a medical board.

Son Alleges Conspiracy, Submits Memorandum to CM

Jagan Gurjar's son, Asaram Gurjar, has levelled serious allegations, claiming his father's death was not simply the result of an assault by a fellow inmate but part of a larger conspiracy involving alleged collusion between prison officials and other inmates. He submitted a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma through Tehsildar Om Singh Lakhawat and CO Manish Badgurjar, demanding a fair and judicial inquiry to establish accountability.

Notably, Jagan Gurjar had been transferred from Dholpur District Jail to Ajmer High-Security Jail on 29 March 2026 following orders from the Directorate General of Prisons. The circumstances of that transfer are likely to come under scrutiny as investigators piece together the sequence of events leading to his death.
