Jamshedpur bandh over Himanshu Singh murder shuts markets, disrupts transport
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A BJP-called bandh brought Jamshedpur to a near standstill on Friday, 3 July, as traders, workers and party supporters joined a shutdown to protest the murder of Karni Sena youth Himanshu Singh. Major markets closed, public transport was suspended, and the district administration imposed prohibitory orders across six police station jurisdictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Shutdown Grip Across the City
Commercial hubs including Sakchi, Bistupur, Jugsalai, Mango and Golmuri downed shutters from early morning, with several traders voluntarily supporting the bandh. Most private educational institutions declared precautionary holidays. Bus and auto-rickshaw services remained largely suspended throughout the city.
In the adjoining industrial belt of Adityapur and Gamharia, bandh supporters reportedly stopped several company buses, leaving many employees unable to reach their workplaces on time. Essential services — including ambulances and pharmacies — were exempted from the shutdown.
Administration Response and Security Deployment
Prohibitory orders were imposed in the Sakchi, Bistupur, Sonari, Kadma, Mango and MGM police station areas. Magistrates and additional police personnel were deployed at sensitive locations across the city. BJP leaders, including MP Bidyut Baran Mahato, MLA Purnima Sahu and MLA Saryu Roy, joined party workers on the streets, appealing for a peaceful shutdown.
The Himanshu Singh Murder: What Happened
Himanshu Singh, affiliated with the Karni Sena, was assaulted outside the Double Down Pub and Bar in Bistupur on 27 June and succumbed to his injuries on 29 June. His supporters have alleged that the assailants dragged him from near a PCR vehicle and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons, despite the presence of police personnel at the scene.
Official Action: Suspensions, Sealing and Arrests
The Jharkhand government subsequently removed the then East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police and the Superintendent of Police of Seraikela-Kharsawan. Four police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of Bistupur police station, have been suspended. The Double Down Bar has been sealed.
Police have arrested several accused in connection with the case and are conducting raids across Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha to trace remaining absconding suspects. The investigation continues as authorities face public pressure over the alleged police inaction at the time of the attack.
