Himanshu Singh murder: BJP calls Jamshedpur bandh on July 3, demands police action
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Himanshu Singh, a resident of Jamshedpur, was dragged out of a police PCR vehicle and fatally attacked by a mob on the night of 27 June outside the Double Down Pub and Bar in the city's Bistupur area, triggering a major political and law-and-order crisis in Jharkhand. Singh succumbed to his injuries on 29 June, and the case has since set off protests, senior police transfers, and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) call for a city-wide bandh in Jamshedpur on 3 July.
What Happened That Night
According to allegations, Singh and a friend intervened when a group of youths reportedly harassed women inside the establishment. A confrontation broke out, and Singh was attacked. Seeking safety, he allegedly took shelter inside a police PCR vehicle — but the attackers reportedly dragged him out in full view of police personnel and assaulted him with sharp-edged weapons. He sustained critical injuries and died during treatment two days later on 29 June.
Police have registered an FIR against 10–11 individuals, including the bar operator and BJP leader Neeraj Singh. Three accused — Sonu Ram Sardar, Raj Lohar, and one other — have been arrested so far, with a manhunt underway for the remaining suspects.
BJP Demands and Protest Programme
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters in Ranchi on Wednesday, BJP Jharkhand President Aditya Sahu described the incident as 'not merely a murder but a direct assault on the rule of law and public faith in the police system.' Sahu demanded that murder charges be filed against the guilty officers and personnel, all accused be arrested immediately, and the case be referred to a fast-track court.
'The morale of criminals has reached such alarming levels that murders are being committed openly in the presence of the police,' Sahu alleged. He also called for adequate compensation and government assistance for the victim's family, and accused the Hemant Soren government of failing to ensure public safety.
The BJP has announced a torchlight procession on the evening of 2 July followed by a city bandh on 3 July in Jamshedpur as part of its protest programme.
Government Response: Transfers and Suspensions
Amid mounting public pressure, Chief Minister Hemant Soren late on Tuesday night ordered the immediate removal of East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Piyush Pandey and Seraikela-Kharsawan Superintendent of Police Nidhi Dwivedi, directing both officers to be attached to the Police Headquarters.
Earlier on Tuesday, four police personnel — including Bistupur SHO Alok Dubey — were suspended. The district administration sealed the Double Down Pub and Bar and ordered a detailed probe into its licence, security arrangements, and operational practices.
Soren asserted that public safety remained the government's top priority and warned that strict action would be taken against both criminals and officials found negligent. He directed the Chaibasa Divisional Commissioner and the ADG (Ranchi) to camp in the region and conduct daily law-and-order reviews. The Jamshedpur DIG has also been instructed to remain stationed in the city.
Street Protests Grip Jamshedpur
The killing has sparked large-scale demonstrations across Jamshedpur. Protesters blocked the busy Bistupur roundabout for several hours on Tuesday. Angry demonstrators also reportedly targeted the official vehicle of the City SP. The scale of the unrest underscores deepening public anger over what many residents describe as a collapse of policing accountability in the city.
With the bandh scheduled for 3 July and further political pressure building, the Soren government faces a critical test of its ability to restore public confidence in law enforcement across the state.
