Srinagar, March 9 (NationPress) On Monday, members of Parliament from Jammu and Kashmir associated with the ruling National Conference (NC) paid a visit to the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to express their condolences in the wake of the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, due to US-Israeli air strikes in Tehran.
Chowdry Mohammad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo, and Gurwinder Singh Oberoi, the Rajya Sabha representatives from Jammu and Kashmir, signed the condolence book dedicated to Khamenei's tragic demise.
According to NC sources, the delegation met with Mohammad Fathali, Iran's Ambassador to India, conveying their heartfelt sorrow and condolences on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as from Farooq Abdullah, the President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, and Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
They vehemently condemned the unilateral and brutal assault executed by the US and Israel against a sovereign nation, asserting that such actions violate international law and threaten regional peace and stability. They prayed for the eternal peace of the departed leader and for lasting tranquility in the region.
On the same day, Mehbooba Mufti, the Chief of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, shared on her official X account: "I visited the Iranian Cultural Centre & Embassy in Delhi to extend my deepest condolences to the Iranian people during these trying times and honored Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for his martyrdom. I also raised concerns regarding Kashmiri students stranded in Iran with the Ambassador."
Jammu and Kashmir, home to a significant Muslim population, witnessed widespread protests following the Supreme Leader's killing, particularly in Shia-majority areas, with Sunni Muslims also taking part.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah engaged with various members of the Kashmir civil society, including individuals from religious, social, and business sectors. He urged the public to express their grief in a dignified and orderly manner, receiving a positive response from all segments of the community for his call to maintain peace.
