Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Japanese Ambassador to India Ono Keiichi on Friday, 23 October 2026 marked two years since he arrived in New Delhi as Japan's top diplomat in the country, expressing deepened admiration for India's dynamism and diversity while highlighting the growing potential of Japan-India bilateral relations. The milestone was accompanied by a warm message on social media, signalling continued momentum in ties between the two nations ahead of a landmark diplomatic anniversary.
Two Years, 36 Trips, 18 States
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ambassador Keiichi shared a collage capturing personal and diplomatic highlights of his tenure — including a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attendance at talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, meals of Indian cuisine, and a dip in the river Ganga in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand.
'Two years ago today, I arrived in Delhi as Japan's Ambassador to India. After 36 trips across 18 states, my admiration for India's dynamism, diversity, and the potential of Japan-India ties has only grown. Looking forward to strengthening our friendship as we mark 75 years in 2027!', Keiichi wrote in his post.
September Cricket Diplomacy in Sano City
The ambassador's anniversary message follows a notable diplomatic exchange last month, when India's Ambassador to Japan, Nagma Mallick, met Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Kazuhiro Fujii on the sidelines of the India-Japan International Friendship Cricket Match in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture on 22 September. According to a post by the Indian Embassy in Japan on X, Ambassador Mallick congratulated Vice-Minister Fujii on his appointment and both sides agreed to jointly work toward further strengthening India-Japan relations, with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties serving as backdrop.
The Modi-Takaichi Summit and Key Agreements
This comes amid a year of sustained high-level engagement between the two countries. In July, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made an official visit to India, holding bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi at the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit. The two leaders discussed the full spectrum of bilateral relations — spanning trade and investment, economic security, energy, emerging technologies, defence, and people-to-people exchanges.
They also addressed regional and global developments of mutual interest, according to a statement from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The summit concluded with both leaders witnessing the exchange of key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements covering economic security, clean energy, critical technologies, and research and development.
A Partnership With Deep Roots
Diplomatic ties between India and Japan were formally established in 1952. The relationship was elevated to a 'Special Strategic and Global Partnership' in 2014, underpinned by long-standing cultural, civilisational, and spiritual affinities. With 2027 set to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations, both countries appear poised to deepen engagement across strategic and people-to-people dimensions.
