Patna, Oct 10 (NationPress) In the midst of ongoing uncertainty regarding seat-sharing within the NDA, Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his party, Janata Dal-United (JD-U), experienced a significant setback on Friday when a number of prominent figures — including a former MP, a former MLA, and the son of a sitting MP — defected to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Patna.
Former MP Santosh Kushwaha, who previously contested from Purnea and was defeated by Pappu Yadav, officially joined the RJD during a ceremony attended by Opposition Leader Tejashwi Yadav.
Joining him were former JD-U MLA from Jehanabad, Rahul Sharma, and Chanakya Prakash, the son of sitting JD-U MP Girdhari Yadav from Banka.
Rahul Sharma, whose father is former MP Jagdish Sharma, hails from the Bhumihar community.
Political analysts suggest that his inclusion could significantly bolster RJD’s presence in various Bhumihar-dominated regions, which have traditionally leaned towards JD-U.
The joining event occurred at the RJD office in Patna, drawing the attention of senior party figures like Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Jehanabad MP Surendra Singh, and Bima Bharti, among others.
During the event, Tejashwi Yadav criticized Nitish Kumar, alleging that his administration was being undermined by a few individuals who are politically weakening him.
“This will be Nitish Kumar’s final election. He will not serve as Chief Minister again. The BJP aims to dismantle his party. They attempted to execute a similar strategy during Operation Lotus in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Fearing political isolation, Nitish Kumar sought my assistance to safeguard his party. We supported him and reinstated him as Chief Minister, yet he has betrayed us once again,” claimed Tejashwi Yadav.
Welcoming the new members, Yadav emphasized: “Santosh Kushwaha is a significant leader of the Kushwaha community. His joining will enhance RJD’s influence in the Seemanchal area, where we previously had limited reach.”
This development represents a considerable political challenge for the JD-U as the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections approach, further underscoring the internal strife within the NDA coalition.
