Following the arrest of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) associate Hamim Mondal from a rented house in Burdwan town, East Burdwan district, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Durgapur Purba Constituency, Chandra Sekhar Banerjee, on Sunday, 3 August visited housing complexes in Durgapur, West Burdwan district, urging residents to verify tenant backgrounds before renting out their properties. The appeal follows heightened security concerns across the twin Burdwan districts after the terror-linked arrest.

MLA's Warning at Tapaban City

Banerjee visited Tapaban City, one of the largest residential complexes in Durgapur, located in the Kanksa area. The high-rise complex comprises numerous towers housing thousands of residents from various parts of the country. The MLA urged residents there to remain alert, noting that the complex's transient population and frequent visitors make it particularly vulnerable.

'If you rent out a flat, please submit copies of the tenant's necessary documents — such as their Aadhaar and Voter ID cards — to the local police station. Additionally, inform the administration if you notice any suspicious individuals or activities,' Banerjee told residents.

The Arrest That Triggered the Alert

The West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) arrested Hamim Mondal from Renaissance Housing in East Burdwan district on Friday, 31 July. His aide, Arpita Sarkar, was also detained. Following interrogation, the STF revealed on Saturday that JeM had allegedly planned to disrupt a protest rally organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

A Pattern of Security Concerns in Durgapur

This is not the first time the Kanksa area has come under security scrutiny. In 2024, the STF arrested a student and five others from Kanksa on charges of alleged links to a militant organisation from Bangladesh, suspected of ties to an Islamist militant group. A few years prior, an accused linked to the case of coal trader Raju Jha was also arrested from Tapaban City.

This is, by recent count, at least the third significant security-related arrest connected to the Durgapur-Burdwan belt, pointing to what officials reportedly describe as a pattern of militant networks exploiting the region's dense, transient rental housing stock.

Administration Response and What Comes Next

The district administration has heightened vigilance around housing complexes in Durgapur in the wake of Mondal's arrest. Citizen-level awareness, however, remains a critical layer that law enforcement alone cannot substitute, according to local officials. The BJP MLA's outreach is aimed at bridging that gap, encouraging residents to proactively coordinate with the police on tenant documentation.

With security agencies continuing their investigation into the alleged JeM plot, further disclosures from the interrogation of Mondal and Sarkar are expected in the coming days.
