West Bengal Police's Special Task Force (STF) on Friday, 31 July arrested a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) operative from a densely populated residential complex in Burdwan city, East Burdwan district. The arrested individual, identified as Hamid Mandal, is described as a Kashmir-based youth allegedly linked to the banned terrorist organisation, according to STF sources.

Mandal was apprehended from the Renaissance Complex, an upscale housing society located near the Durgapur Expressway in Burdwan, where he had been residing in a rented flat. Investigators are probing whether Hamid Mandal is his real name or an alias, sources said. Following the arrest, he was to be produced before a district court in Burdwan later on Friday, with the Public Prosecutor expected to seek police custody.

Notably, prior to shifting to Burdwan, Mandal had reportedly stayed at a rented accommodation in Newtown, on the northern outskirts of Kolkata — a location described by sources as not far from the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

VVIP Schedule Documents Recovered

Among the most alarming findings of the operation is the recovery of documents allegedly detailing the daily schedule of Chief Minister Adhikari, along with travel details of other VVIPs, from Mandal's possession. The discovery has heightened security concerns, given that Adhikari has previously been flagged as a target by fundamentalist organisations, according to central intelligence inputs. His security arrangements have been periodically reviewed and upgraded by the Union Government, including during his tenure as Leader of the Opposition under the previous All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) regime.

According to investigating officers, Mandal is believed to have spent considerable time in Pakistan and is suspected to have received training from ISI-linked networks. Sources indicate he allegedly operated as a JeM handler in West Bengal, with his primary role being the systematic radicalisation of Muslim youth — recruiting them into terror outfits and facilitating their travel to Pakistan for training.

STF officers have launched parallel interrogations of the homeowners in both Newtown and Burdwan who rented flats to Mandal. Investigators are examining the identity documents he submitted at the time of renting — a line of inquiry that could reveal whether forged or fraudulent papers were used to establish a cover identity across multiple locations in the state.
