Jharkhand High Court Demands In-Depth Inquiry into HIV-Infected Blood Transfusion Case in Chaibasa
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, April 8 (NationPress) The Jharkhand High Court has expressed serious concern regarding the reported transfusion of HIV-infected blood to minor children at the blood bank of Chaibasa Sadar Hospital, labeling the situation as extremely serious.
The court has requested a thorough status report from the state government regarding this issue.
During a hearing on Wednesday, a bench led by Justice Rongan Mukhopadhyay conveyed its dissatisfaction with the government's response, pointing out that simply filing an FIR is insufficient in a case of such significant implications.
The court emphasized that accountability must be established, and those accountable for this serious lapse should face legal consequences.
The petition, filed by Deepika Hembram and others, called for the registration of an FIR and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged negligence.
The court was informed that FIR No. 18/2026 had already been filed on February 6 of this year. However, the state government did not clarify the progress of the investigation, which led to strong criticism from the bench.
In its remarks, the court noted that the transfusion of HIV-infected blood to young patients has devastating repercussions on their lives and futures and should not be treated lightly.
It pointed out that the affidavit submitted by the state government was limited to merely confirming the FIR, lacking substantial details regarding the investigation's progress or actions taken thus far.
Taking serious notice of the incident, the High Court has instructed the state government to present a supplementary affidavit that outlines the entire investigative process and the actions taken up to this point.
This case emerged in 2025 after five minor thalassemia patients at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital reportedly received HIV-contaminated blood during transfusions. The families of the victims subsequently approached the High Court seeking justice.
The matter is set for further hearing on April 21.
