Ranchi, March 17 (NationPress) In a deeply disturbing event driven by superstition, a 50-year-old woman was brutally killed in Jharkhand's Gumla district over accusations of witchcraft. Her remains were located buried in the sand along the Khatwa river, as reported by officials.

The authorities retrieved the body on Monday and apprehended the main suspect, Karmpal Lakra, who has admitted to the crime.

The victim, who lived in Phatti Bagicha Toli, had been unaccounted for for four days. Her son filed a missing person report at the Gumla Sadar police station.

Fearing that his mother had fallen victim to a witchcraft accusation, he expressed worry over potential foul play.

Following the report, the police, guided by the Superintendent of Police in Gumla district, initiated an investigation using a dog squad. During their search, they discovered a slipper and towel believed to belong to the missing woman near the Khatwa river. Drawing from these leads and local testimonies, authorities detained Lakra, a neighbor of the deceased, for interrogation.

Upon questioning, Lakra confessed to the murder, stating he had killed the woman and concealed her body in the sand by the riverbank. After his admission, the police exhumed the remains and arranged for a post-mortem examination.

In a related alarming case, a couple was violently killed in Bihar’s Jamui district on suspicions of practicing witchcraft.

This horrific incident transpired in Chilko village, situated within the jurisdiction of the Jhajha police station. The couple was attacked and murdered with sharp-edged weapons by their relatives, who accused them of being witches. This dreadful act has reverberated throughout the region.

Upon receiving the news, Jamui SP Madan Kumar Anand and the Jhajha SDPO promptly arrived at the scene. Police officials conducted an assessment and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination.
