Ranchi, July 24 (NationPress) The decision by the Jharkhand government to transform Atal Mohalla Clinics into Mother Teresa Advanced Health Clinics has ignited a significant political uproar in the state.
This change, sanctioned during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday, was defended by the government as an effort to connect health services with the compassion and service principles represented by Mother Teresa.
In contrast, the opposition BJP has denounced the move, labeling it as politically motivated and disrespectful.
BJP state spokesperson Ajay Sah criticized the government, accusing it of indulging in “petty politics” and trying to diminish the legacy of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
“Whenever there is a positive initiative for development in Jharkhand, the JMM government drags it into controversy,” Sah stated.
“Initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and Atal Mohalla Clinics stem from the BJP’s visionary approach, designed to make healthcare accessible to the underprivileged. Changing their names to align with political agendas is regrettable,” he remarked.
Sah also emphasized that Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, was instrumental in the formation of Jharkhand, and his contributions are firmly rooted in public memory. “Removing his name from a public welfare initiative is a grave insult to him and to the essence of Jharkhand,” he asserted.
The BJP leader contended that while the government is free to introduce new schemes with fresh names, altering existing and well-regarded initiatives reflects a “distorted political mindset.”
He also pointed out that this is not the first such incident involving the Hemant Soren administration.
Referring to a previous controversy regarding the potential renaming of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Sah cautioned that “the populace of Jharkhand will not accept repeated attempts to undermine national icons.”
Earlier in the day, the Jharkhand government confirmed the renaming of all Atal Mohalla Clinics in the state to Mother Teresa Advanced Health Clinics. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Currently, approximately 140 clinics are operational throughout Jharkhand, primarily focused on providing basic healthcare services to the urban and rural poor at the community level.
