Srinagar, Oct 15 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially revealed its candidates for the upcoming bypolls in the Legislative Assembly seats of Nagrota and Budgam within Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

According to a party spokesperson, Devyani Rana has been selected as the candidate for the Nagrota seat in the Jammu division, while Aga Syed Mohsin will represent the party in the Budgam seat in Kashmir.

The Nagrota seat became available following the unfortunate passing of the incumbent BJP MLA, Devender Singh Rana, on October 31, 2024. He had secured victory in the 2024 Assembly elections representing BJP from Nagrota.

Devyani Rana is the daughter of the late Devender Singh Rana.

The Budgam seat was vacated when Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the National Conference (NC), triumphed in the Assembly elections from both Budgam and Ganderbal in 2024. He subsequently resigned from Budgam, opting to retain the Ganderbal seat in the 90-member J&K Assembly.

As of now, aside from BJP, no other political parties have declared their candidates for these two Assembly positions.

The chief spokesperson of the Apni Party, led by Syed Altaf Bukhari, Mohiuddin Muntazir, has announced his resignation from the party to contest the elections as an Independent candidate from the Budgam constituency.

The election is scheduled for November 11, with the counting of votes set for November 14.

During the 2024 Assembly elections, the NC secured 42 seats, BJP 29, Congress 6, PDP 3, Aam Aadmi Party 1, CPI(M) 1, Awami Ittehad Party 1, Peoples Conference 1, and 6 Independents were also elected.

Six independents joined the NC later, while the Congress opted to support the government led by Omar Abdullah from the outside without direct involvement.

The Election Commission has also scheduled elections for four Rajya Sabha seats from J&K. These elections are a significant event as it's been over four years since J&K had a Legislative Assembly, following its suspension in February 2021.

The NC has nominated four candidates for these seats, while BJP is putting forward candidates for three.
