New Delhi, Oct 15 (NationPress) Following the tragic alleged suicide of senior IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar and a recent incident involving an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in Haryana, Congress MP Kumari Selja has expressed deep concern, asserting that all is not well in the state. She labeled it the “greatest failure” of the Haryana government.
"This is a critical issue. It evidently indicates that serious problems exist within the Haryana government. It raises significant questions about the administration's confidence in its leadership. Why are esteemed officers resorting to such drastic measures? Why are they taking their own lives? First, we faced the loss of IPS officer Puran Kumar, and now an ASI," she remarked.
Kumari Selja suggested that the administration has lost trust in the government.
"This clearly shows that the administration lacks faith in the government. This is the government’s most significant failure. I have consistently argued that unless justice is accessible, impartial, and fair, we will never comprehend the true causes behind these devastating events. The government must be held accountable," she emphasized.
Meanwhile, the family of the 2001-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Y. Puran Kumar, who tragically took his life in Chandigarh last week, has finally agreed to the autopsy, nearly nine days post-incident. The officer is expected to be cremated around 4 p.m. at the Chandigarh cremation ground, according to officials.
Authorities reported that Additional Director General of Police Puran Kumar died from a gunshot inflicted by his service weapon, leaving behind a nine-page “final note” implicating 15 current and former officers, highlighting issues of casteism and bias within the state police’s upper echelons.
In a related incident, a Haryana Police Assistant Sub-Inspector was discovered deceased with a gunshot wound, alongside a suspected suicide note accusing the late Puran Kumar of corrupt practices.
As the controversy surrounding Puran Kumar’s suicide escalated, Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was placed on leave, with Om Parkash Singh appointed as the acting Director General of Police. This decision came amid calls from Kumar's family for accountability against Kapur and other officers who allegedly harassed Puran Kumar.
For over a week, tensions persisted between Puran Kumar’s wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior IAS officer in Haryana, and the government, regarding demands for the arrest of DGP Kapur and the dismissed Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya.
Labeling the situation a tragedy and a delicate issue, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to honor their commitments to the family and take action against those officers implicated in caste-based discrimination against Puran Kumar.
