Chandigarh, Oct 7 (NationPress) The Inspector General of Police (IG) of Haryana, Y. Puran Kumar, who was part of the IPS 2001 batch, reportedly took his own life on Tuesday at his home in Sector 11, Chandigarh.
At the time of the incident, his wife, Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer, was in Japan with an official delegation headed by Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
According to police reports, Puran Kumar allegedly used his service revolver, and his lifeless body was discovered by his daughter in the basement. No suicide note was found at the scene, leaving the police and administrative officials in a state of disbelief.
The occurrence took place earlier in the day.
Forensic experts and Chandigarh Police teams have arrived to investigate the situation.
Chandigarh's SSP, Kanwardeep Kaur, informed the media that authorities received a report of a suspected suicide from House No. 116, Sector 11, Chandigarh, around 1:30 p.m. The deceased has been identified as Puran Kumar.
“The CFSL team is at the site, and further inquiries are ongoing,” she mentioned. The police have secured Kumar's mobile devices and relevant documents from the location. His wife, Amneet, serves as the Commissioner and Secretary in the Foreign Cooperation Department and is anticipated to return to India on Wednesday.
Reports indicate that Kumar acquired the firearm from a gunman on Monday. Last month, he was reassigned to Sunaria Jail in Rohtak, the same facility where Dera Sacha Sauda chief Ram Rahim is imprisoned for sexual exploitation offenses involving sadhvis.
Puran Kumar had previously expressed concerns regarding the promotion of certain IPS officers from the 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2005 batches. An engineering graduate born on May 19, 1973, he was scheduled to retire on May 31, 2033.
The investigation is currently assessing whether recent professional pressures or personal issues played a role in this heartbreaking incident. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
