Hyderabad, Nov 12 (NationPress) The Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency in Telangana witnessed a voter turnout of just 48.49 percent during the recent by-election held on Tuesday, showcasing the ineffectiveness of various initiatives by election officials aimed at fostering increased voter engagement. On Wednesday, the returning officer confirmed the final polling percentage.
As the polls closed at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, a turnout of 48.43 percent had been recorded. Still, voters waiting in line at polling stations were permitted to cast their ballots.
Despite the diligent efforts made by election officials, the final turnout remained below the 50 percent mark, although it showed a slight improvement over the 47.58 percent turnout during the 2023 Assembly elections.
Since its establishment in 2009, the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency has consistently exhibited low voter turnout. The highest turnout was recorded in 2009 at 52.76 percent.
In subsequent elections, the turnout decreased to 50.18 percent in 2014, dropped further to 45.59 percent in 2018, before slightly increasing to 47.58 percent in 2023.
The District Election Office (DEO) undertook substantial efforts to enhance voter participation, with officials expressing optimism that turnout could reach up to 60 percent.
Various targeted awareness campaigns and initiatives were implemented to encourage voter participation, informing voters about the polling process and the importance of their vote.
However, the final turnout fell significantly short of the expectations set by election authorities.
A notable disappointment in this bypoll was the absence of many Tollywood celebrities at the polls.
Although a few film personalities, including veteran actor Tanikella Bharani, celebrated filmmaker SS Rajamouli, and actor Gopichand, participated, numerous industry heavyweights were not seen.
Stars like Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, Venkatesh, Junior NTR, Ramcharan, and Allu Arjun, who had previously encouraged voters to come out and vote, were notably absent this time.
Jubilee Hills is known as the center of the Telugu film industry, housing significant film studios and offices of various associations, as well as residences of many leading actors, directors, and producers.
Areas such as Film Nagar, Krishnanagar, Srinagar Colony, Rahmath Nagar, and Yousufguda boast a substantial number of film industry professionals.
Despite its name suggesting affluence, the constituency also includes many middle-class and underprivileged neighborhoods.
Polling remained peaceful across all 407 polling stations, barring minor incidents.
Over 4 lakh voters were eligible to participate in this by-election, which was necessitated by the passing of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
A total of 58 candidates contested, with the primary competition occurring between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BRS and BJP.
The BRS nominated Gopinath’s wife, Sunitha, while the Congress put forth Naveen Yadav, and the BJP re-nominated Lankala Deepak Reddy.
Vote counting is scheduled for November 14.
While numerous exit polls forecast a Congress victory, both the BRS and BJP maintain confidence in their chances of winning the seat.
