Bhubaneswar, Feb 19 (NationPress) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday assured officials from Nepal that the state government would guarantee swift justice in the case concerning the heartbreaking suicide of a Nepali student, Prakriti Samsal, at KIIT University on Sunday.
He also promised that peace and normalcy would soon be reinstated on the campus of the private university in Bhubaneswar.
“Hon’ble Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke with Nepali Counsellors Sanjeeb Das Sharma and Navin Raj Adhikari, assuring them that justice will be served in the case of the deceased KIIT student, Prakriti.
“He further assured that peace and normalcy would be restored on the KIIT campus. The CM encouraged Nepali students to return to campus and continue their education,” informed the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) on Wednesday.
The CMO also disclosed that Ministers Mukesh Mahaling and Suryabanshi Suraj, along with Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, held discussions with officials from Nepal at the State Guest House to ensure the restoration of normalcy at KIIT.
The Foreign Minister of Nepal, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, also had a phone conversation with the Higher Education Department Minister Suryabanshi Suraj regarding the situation.
It is essential to mention that the Odisha government constituted a high-level fact-finding committee under the Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Home Department, alongside the Principal Secretary of Women and Child Development and the Commissioner cum Secretary of the Higher Education Department to investigate the alleged mistreatment of other students from the neighboring country by the authorities of KIIT University in Bhubaneswar.
The Odisha government has assigned a senior official at KIIT University to help restore normalcy on the campus.
On Tuesday, the city police took into custody five staff members of the private university on accusations of assaulting students from Nepal.
It is noteworthy that the deceased student, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech (Computer Science) student at KIIT University, took her own life on Sunday following harassment by her estranged boyfriend, Advik Shrivastava, a B.Tech (Mechanical) student.
The police apprehended the accused at Bhubaneswar Airport while he was attempting to flee the city on Monday.
In the meantime, students who protested for justice for the deceased were ordered to vacate the campus.
The private university authorities forcibly evicted the protesting students and allegedly assaulted them.
Following criticism from various sectors, the university issued an apology letter regarding the incident and urged the students to return to campus.
Furthermore, two senior hostel officials and one senior administrative officer of the International Relations Office have been suspended pending an inquiry.
