Amaravati, May 25 (NationPress) The Andhra Pradesh Police apprehended former minister and YSR Congress Party leader Kakani Govardhan Reddy in connection with an illegal quartz mining case in Kerala on Sunday.
Kakani, who had managed to avoid arrest for several months, was captured by a team from the Andhra Pradesh Police in Kerala. He is expected to be transported to Nellore on Monday.
In February, a case was filed against Kakani in Nellore district, based on accusations of unauthorized mineral extraction and illegal transportation, following a complaint from the Mines and Geology Department.
Notices were served to him by the Nellore Rural Deputy Superintendent of Police regarding the case. However, he did not respond to the police summons.
Kakani, identified as the fourth accused in the case, sought anticipatory bail from the High Court and later the Supreme Court but was unsuccessful.
Last month, authorities issued a lookout notice for Kakani Govardhan Reddy to restrict his international travel, which has been communicated to airports and seaports.
There are claims that during the tenure of the YSRCP, Kakani engaged in illegal quartz mining in the Nellore district.
Reports suggest that illegal quartz mining persisted near Thoderu village in Podalakur mandal, even after the mining lease for mica near Tatiparthi expired.
TDP leader and Sarvepalli MLA Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy expressed concerns about widespread illegal mining back in 2019.
An investigation by the Mines and Geology Department unveiled that approximately 61,313 metric tonnes of quartz were illegally extracted and transported, culminating in an estimated revenue loss of Rs 7.56 crore, inclusive of fines.
The investigation, initiated following the TDP-led coalition's rise to power last year, also disclosed that Kakani had unlawfully stored explosive materials utilized in mining and had allegedly intimidated tribal individuals who questioned the illegal operations.
Kakani is among several YSRCP leaders under scrutiny for alleged corruption during the party's governance.
The YSRCP, in contrast, accuses the TDP of pursuing its leaders out of political retribution.
