A serious security breach unfolded at the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday, 26 August, when a group of Kanwariyas allegedly forced their way past barricades and attempted to enter the Nandi Hall, triggering a confrontation with security personnel that left four guards injured. The incident has prompted police to examine video footage and initiate the process of identifying those involved.

How the Incident Unfolded

Approximately 100 pilgrims, who had arrived from Khedighat in Omkareshwar carrying Kanwars, allegedly deviated from the designated devotee route and crossed the first set of barricades, moving toward the Nandi Hall despite being stopped by security staff, according to temple management officials.

When guards attempted to block their advance, the pilgrims allegedly began jumping over the barricades. The ensuing confrontation caused several barricades to collapse, and security personnel were caught in the melee.

Damage and Injuries

The temple management committee alleged that some individuals in the group also damaged barricades and other security infrastructure, and attempted to move donation boxes while seeking unauthorised access toward the sanctum sanctorum.

Four security personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation, with two of them reportedly suffering serious injuries to their legs and head. Both were taken for medical treatment. A video of the incident circulated on social media, showing security staff struggling to push back the crowd amid the commotion.

What the Temple Management Said

'The persons involved in the incident are being identified and legal action will be taken against them,' the temple management committee said in a statement. Police personnel stationed at the site intervened and took some of those involved to the Mahakal police station for questioning.

Investigation Under Way

Authorities are currently reviewing video footage and other available evidence to identify the individuals responsible. Officials confirmed that further action will follow once the investigation is complete. This comes amid the annual Kanwar Yatra season, when large groups of Shiva devotees undertake pilgrimages to collect sacred water and visit Jyotirlinga shrines — a period that historically places heightened pressure on temple security arrangements.

The Mahakaleshwar temple is one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas and draws pilgrims from across the country year-round, making crowd management a perennial challenge for authorities.
