Gwalior, July 23 (NationPress) Four Kanwariyas tragically lost their lives in a road collision on the Agra-Mumbai National Highway, near the Sheetla Mata Mandir Gate in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
The group, consisting of 13 members, was returning from Bhadavna after gathering sacred water for Jalabhishek. They were walking beside the road when a speeding vehicle, which had lost control, struck them.
Initial police investigations revealed that the incident happened around 1 a.m. due to a tyre burst on the car, leading it to veer off the Shivpuri Link Road, hitting the devotees before overturning into nearby bushes.
The term "Kanwariya" denotes a devotee participating in the Kanwar Yatra, a pilgrimage observed by followers of Lord Shiva.
The name originates from "Kanwar" or "Kavad", a bamboo pole with two pots attached, which devotees carry to collect holy water from the Ganges or other sacred sites.
According to police officials, three Kanwariyas died immediately, while one succumbed to injuries at Jaya Arogya Hospital (JAH). Two others are reported to be in critical condition.
In total, six individuals were impacted by the car - with three fatalities on the scene, one death occurring in hospital, and two others currently receiving treatment.
In a heartfelt statement via his X account, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed his condolences and declared a financial aid of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased.
"I pray to Baba Mahakal to provide peace to the departed souls and strength to the grieving families," he stated.
The City Superintendent of Police, Heena Khan, confirmed that the vehicle was found abandoned at the scene, with no occupants present.
Authorities are currently tracking down the car's owner and searching for the individuals who were in the vehicle during the incident.
The victims have been identified as residents of Simaria Panchayat, Ghatigaon, with three being from the same family.
The group was on their way back to their village, located roughly 35 km from the accident site when this tragic event occurred.
Emergency response teams from Kampu, Janakganj, Jhansi Road, and Madhoganj police stations acted quickly, rescuing victims from a roadside ditch and conveying them to the trauma center.
This incident has cast a shadow over the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage celebrated during the holy month of Shravan.
The accident has reignited discussions surrounding road safety during religious events, particularly on high-speed highways. Police presence in the area has been intensified to ensure order and prevent additional incidents.
