New Delhi, June 26 (NationPress) As we approach the Kargil Vijay Diwas, a range of events are being organized to celebrate the unbreakable spirit, sacrifice, and bravery of our armed forces. On Thursday, the Indian Army shared heroic moments from Operation Vijay—a conflict that unfolded in the mountainous terrains of Jammu and Kashmir in 1999.
To remind the nation of this significant day, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information, IHQ of MoD (Army) posted on its X handle: "Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025: Just 30 Days Away…. 30 Days to Remember. A heartfelt tribute to the unmatched valour of our #Bravehearts. Their courage resonates through the heights of Kargil, forever engraved in the heart of India."
The Indian Army has been conducting numerous events to honor the personnel who safeguarded our borders in 1999, marking the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Each year on July 26, India observes Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day that commemorates the successful conclusion of Operation Vijay in 1999, when Indian forces reclaimed crucial heights from Pakistani infiltrators.
This year’s commemoration holds added significance following the successful Operation Sindoor, involving airstrikes on nine terror bases within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, as well as 11 airbases.
A major highlight of Kargil Vijay Diwas 2025 is a special outreach initiative aimed at honoring the Next of Kin (NoK) of 545 Kargil War martyrs. Indian Army teams are visiting families across 25 states, two Union Territories, and Nepal.
During these visits, representatives present a letter of thanks from the Indian Army, a memento, and information about benefits provided by both Central and state governments. They also gather feedback on any challenges faced by the families and extend support.
In June, as a mark of deep respect and eternal gratitude, Indian Army officers visited Capt Vijayant Thapar’s residence in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The Army honored his father, Col (Retd) V.N. Thapar, and mother with a commemorative memento.
The Army also plans to collect war-related memorabilia from the families, which will be preserved at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras as a lasting tribute to their legacy. The commemoration will culminate in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Dras memorial on July 26.
The conflict began in May 1999 when Indian forces detected Pakistani infiltration in the Kargil district along the Line of Control (LOC). The war lasted until July 1999, during which the Indian Army successfully expelled the Pakistani intruders and recaptured Tiger Hill and other strategic positions under Operation Vijay.
Indian soldiers achieved a decisive victory in the conflict on July 26, 1999.
