The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka has nominated Prof. M. Nagaraj, a long-time Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) affiliate and former professor, as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The party also announced Lingaraj Patil and Raghu Kautilya as its nominees for the Legislative Council, completing a three-candidate slate unveiled on Monday, 8 June.

Who Is Prof. M. Nagaraj

Originally from Hubballi-Dharwad, Nagaraj brings a blend of academic and organisational credentials to the nomination. He served as a professor for several years and has been associated with student politics since his college days, starting with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) before deepening his ties with the RSS. Within the BJP's state structure, he rose to serve as a state vice president of the Karnataka BJP unit. He also served as a member of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), giving him a foothold in administrative governance.

Organisational Work and Ideological Roots

Nagaraj has been associated with initiatives rooted in the BJP's ideological framework inspired by Jan Sangh founder Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. Notably, he served as Karnataka coordinator for a party office construction committee — a vision project linked to Union Home Minister Amit Shah — aimed at building BJP offices in every district across the state. The party stated that his nomination reflects a deliberate preference for leaders who combine academic grounding with administrative exposure and grassroots organisational experience.

The Legislative Council Nominees

R. Raghu Kautilya, State President of the BJP's OBC Morcha, holds an MA in Political Science and has worked across language, literature, journalism, culture, education, and social service. He has chaired Mysore Paints and Varnishes Limited and Dr Devaraj Urs Backward Classes Development Corporation, and is the founder of Kautilya Vidyalaya and Nypunya School of Excellence.

Lingaraj Patil, a senior party functionary, said the nomination was a recognition of decades of ground-level work. 'The party has given an opportunity to me to serve society as well as the state. It's a golden opportunity to serve society. I worked for 37 years in the party. The party has recognised 'karyakarta' for such a post; I am very happy,' Patil said.

Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, R. Ashoka, congratulated all three nominees. 'Heartfelt wishes to Dr. M. Nagaraj, who has been selected as the party candidate for the Rajya Sabha election from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, and to Shri Lingaraj Patil and Shri Raghu Kautilya, who have been chosen as party candidates for the Legislative Council elections,' Ashoka said. He added that he hoped their 'experience, dedication, and people-centric vision' would strengthen legislative functioning and contribute to good governance in Karnataka.

The nominations signal the BJP's intent to field ideologically rooted, organisationally tested candidates ahead of what are expected to be competitive upper-house contests in the state.
