Bengaluru, Oct 9 (NationPress) The Congress-led government in Karnataka has officially ratified a significant proposal granting women employees in various sectors a paid menstrual leave of one day each month. During a press briefing at Vidhana Soudha following the cabinet meeting, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil shared this progressive decision.

The state cabinet meeting, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, reached this consensus.

Minister Patil clarified that the menstrual leave policy will extend to government offices, garment factories, multinational companies (MNCs), IT firms, and private industrial sectors throughout Karnataka.

When questioned about the similar policies in four other states, Minister Patil noted that no formal studies were conducted by the government.

He mentioned that due to the policy's effectiveness in other states, it has now been embraced in Karnataka.

State Labour Minister Santosh Lad stated, "We have been striving for a year to implement this menstrual leave rule. Women carry multiple duties, managing both household responsibilities and childcare. During their menstrual cycle, they endure significant physical and mental stress. Therefore, we established a committee to discuss this initiative. The committee suggested granting six days of leave annually, but the government has now opted for 12 days per year."

"While we are uncertain about the implementation in other states, we are dedicated to ensuring its success in Karnataka, applicable across all sectors, both public and private," added the Labour Minister.

Additionally, the cabinet has allocated Rs 200 crore for fertilizer stocking for the financial year 2025-26.

In principle, the government also approved the reconstruction and renovation of bridges with an estimated budget of Rs 2,000 crore.

For the educational advancement of children belonging to registered workers under the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board, administrative approval has been granted to establish 11 labor residential schools in the second phase, with an estimated cost of Rs 405.55 crore.
