Karnataka Health Minister Engages with Family of Deceased New Mother, Commits to Reducing Maternal Mortality

Ballari (Karnataka), Dec 7 (NationPress) Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao visited the grieving family of Sumaya, a new mother who recently lost her life at the Ballari Government Hospital, to extend his condolences.

“I am diligently working with complete awareness of my obligations to avert any further tragedies,” he emphasized.

During his visit to the district, prompted by the recent maternal fatalities at the local hospital, the minister paid a visit to Sumaya's residence in Azad Nagar, Kudligi. MLA N.T. Srinivas accompanied him on this visit.

Addressing the media, the minister stated, “Upon learning about the deaths of new mothers, we promptly established an expert committee, assigning them the task of investigating the causes behind these incidents. Such occurrences are unacceptable. The government is taking this matter with utmost seriousness, and we are implementing measures to prevent similar events in the future.”

Regarding his visit to the home of the deceased, he remarked, “This is my duty, and that is the reason for my presence here. Despite criticisms from the BJP, I am working earnestly with full cognizance of my responsibilities.”

“We have examined the IV fluid and ordered action against the manufacturer. As a precaution, we have halted the usage of IV Ringer’s Lactate throughout the state and instructed all hospitals to refrain from its use,” he added.

In connection with the recent maternal fatalities post-caesarean sections, Karnataka Lokayukta officials conducted raids at government hospitals in Ballari on Saturday.

Three teams from the state Lokayukta carried out searches at the Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) and the Ballari District Government Hospital.

Following the deaths of six women after childbirth in the Ballari area, Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reported on Friday that there have been 327 maternal deaths recorded in the state this year. He further indicated that he had ordered investigations into all cases.

“There must be no tolerance for such cases. Strict legal actions should be enforced. Pharmaceutical companies are often shielded by the law. The laws have failed to penalize them when they are culpable,” Minister Rao asserted.

He also stated that if his resignation would resolve the issue, he would be prepared to resign.
