Karnataka Transport Workers Begin Indefinite Strike; BJP Critiques Government's Inaction
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, April 21 (NationPress) In a significant move, the Karnataka chapter of the BJP has urged the Congress-led state government to reconsider its inflexible approach and initiate immediate discussions with transport workers to avert a total halt of public services, following the workers' announcement of an indefinite strike starting today.
Karnataka BJP president and MLA BY Vijayendra has taken a strong stance against the Congress-led administration, accusing it of ongoing failures that have intensified the challenges faced by the public.
Vijayendra expressed that the government's failure to tackle critical issues has left citizens in distress, with no impending relief in view.
The BJP leader highlighted the recent increase in electricity rates, stating that it has already added to the citizens' burden. He cautioned that failing to address the legitimate concerns of transport employees could lead to widespread disruptions.
He claimed that the government has been procrastinating in addressing workers' demands, which include postponing the 2024 wage revision to 2026. According to him, this neglect is responsible for the current predicament.
In his critique of the government’s signature guarantee schemes, Vijayendra stated that while the Congress promotes free bus travel, it has not guaranteed a dependable and organized transport system to facilitate these benefits efficiently.
He described this as a “tragic” failure in governance.
“Any disturbance in transport services will severely impact students, employees, and daily commuters. The “inactive Congress government” will bear direct responsibility for the aftermath,” he cautioned.
Blaming the state government for prioritizing politics over public welfare, Vijayendra stated that it has created a pattern of delaying solutions instead of tackling issues head-on.
“The Congress government, which is incapable of resolving problems, lacks the moral authority to govern,” he added.
Transport workers have initiated an indefinite protest from Tuesday at Freedom Park in Bengaluru due to delays in salary adjustments. They are advocating for equal pay with other government employees, settling of outstanding dues, and official recognition of their unions.
The strike is organized by a federation of unions representing workers from the four Karnataka State Road Transport Corporations.
As part of their protest, the workers have committed to an indefinite satyagraha in the city.
