Chennai, Oct 15 (NationPress) Two prominent figures from actor Vijay's TVK party — Karur West District Secretary Mathiyazhagan and Municipal In-charge Paunraj — have been granted bail in relation to the devastating stampede that resulted in 41 fatalities during a party rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur on September 27. The local police apprehended the two on September 30 following the tragic crowd surge at a public meeting organized by the party as part of its statewide outreach initiative.
The event, which attracted thousands of passionate supporters, turned disastrous when chaos ensued due to a lengthy delay in the arrival of party leader and actor Vijay.
Subsequent reports indicated that the venue had become critically overcrowded and was ill-equipped with necessary provisions such as drinking water, food, and proper crowd control.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Tamil Nadu government faced intense backlash over the apparent security and logistical shortcomings.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, while addressing the Assembly on Wednesday, stated that the event had been authorized with 11 specific conditions and was allotted more police presence than usual. Nevertheless, the uncontrolled influx resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals and injuries to many, predominantly women who had queued since the early morning to catch a glimpse of Vijay.
Mathiyazhagan and Paunraj were initially placed in 14 days of judicial custody at Trichy Central Prison, and their custody period concluded on Tuesday.
As the case transitioned to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the accused requested the court to release the state’s special investigation team (SIT) from further examination.
In response to the plea, the district judge in Karur instructed that both individuals be presented before the court.
After considering arguments from both parties, the judge granted them unconditional bail, acknowledging that the case was now under the jurisdiction of the CBI.
The CBI is anticipated to probe whether the event organizers breached safety regulations and if there was any negligence on the part of authorities in upholding the conditions.
Vijay, who has declared his intent to fully engage in politics through the TVK and aims to contest the 2026 Assembly elections, expressed profound sorrow over the incident and vowed to cooperate fully with the investigation.
