Guwahati, Oct 15 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is set to travel to Assam on October 17 to pay tribute to the state’s renowned singer and cultural figure, Zubeen Garg, as confirmed by an official statement from the Congress party on Wednesday.
As per the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Gandhi will land in Guwahati and make his way to Sonapur, located on the outskirts of the city, where Zubeen Garg has been laid to rest.
He is anticipated to offer floral tributes at the memorial site and subsequently visit the late singer’s family residence to express condolences to the grieving relatives.
The APCC Media Department, which is organizing the visit, stated that all necessary arrangements have been made to conduct the event in a respectful and orderly fashion.
The party emphasized that Gandhi’s visit signifies the profound respect and emotional connection that the people of Assam have for Zubeen Garg.
Meanwhile, Gaurav Gogoi expressed deep concern over the “unprecedented and unfortunate” incidents that occurred outside Baksa District Jail, calling for peace and highlighting shortcomings in law enforcement.
In his statement, Gogoi mentioned that the people of Assam are united in their pursuit of justice for the late singer Zubeen Garg and stressed the importance of a “comprehensive and fair investigation” into his passing.
“Justice is achievable only through the legal system. Taking matters into one's own hands will not aid this cause,” he urged, asking citizens to remain calm and patient during this sensitive period.
The APCC chief criticized both the police and the Home Department for their failure to foresee the unrest.
“The law enforcement agencies had a duty to evaluate the situation and take preventive action. Their inaction has contributed to the chaos we experienced today,” Gogoi stated.
He voiced concern over reports of journalists suffering serious injuries while covering the incident and condemned the arson of a regional media house vehicle.
He labeled the attacks on media personnel as “entirely unacceptable” and called on authorities to guarantee their safety. Gogoi urged all parties involved to act responsibly and allow the legal process to unfold, stressing that violence would only exacerbate the crisis.
Notably, violent protests erupted outside the Baksa District Jail after the five individuals accused in the Zubeen Garg death case were brought to the facility under heavy police protection. In response to rising tensions, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prevent further unrest.
