Kolkata, Oct 15 (NationPress) West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has delivered a comprehensive report to President Droupadi Murmu and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday concerning the alleged gang rape of a Dalit medical student in Durgapur, located in the West Burdwan district.
An insider from Raj Bhavan has confirmed that the Governor's report encompasses insights from his recent visit to Durgapur and discussions with the victim's family. However, the specific contents of the report remain confidential.
Earlier in the day, while addressing a media gathering at a chamber of commerce event in Kolkata, Governor Bose voiced his alarm over the escalating incidents of sexual violence in the state. He remarked, “Given the recent surge in crimes against women, including the Durgapur case, it can no longer be proclaimed that West Bengal is a secure environment for women.”
The distressing incident took place on the night of October 10, involving a second-year student from Odisha who is studying at a private medical college in Durgapur. Preliminary reports suggest that the victim was attacked after she left the college premises around 8 p.m. to purchase food, and she was allegedly pulled into a nearby forest where the assault occurred.
The police have apprehended six suspects linked to this case, all of whom are currently in custody.
Previously, the Governor indirectly criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress for the recurring sexual crimes reported in West Bengal, stating, “What we are witnessing now is merely the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface lies a more profound issue, which is the incompetence of those in charge of governance.”
He also condemned the state police for not responding adequately to such serious cases of sexual violence against women. “The fundamental responsibility of the authorities is to uphold law and order in the state. As Governor, I cannot assert that the police administration here is performing satisfactorily. The current scenario in West Bengal suggests characteristics of a ‘soft state’ where legal enforcement is not effectively applied,” he added.
According to him, it is essential for the police administration to maintain order and enforce legal provisions rigorously. “Law enforcement agencies bear the responsibility for the violence or disorder prevalent in the state,” the Governor concluded.
