Kolkata, Oct 11 (NationPress) Extending “full support” to the student who was reportedly gang-raped outside its campus in West Bengal's Durgapur on Friday night, the private medical college and hospital announced that it will also fully cooperate with law enforcement.
In a statement released on Saturday, the college administration expressed, “It is with profound concern and sorrow that we must inform the public about a deeply disturbing incident involving two of our MBBS 2nd year students.”
The statement detailed, “Last evening, at approximately 7:58 p.m., both students left the campus for dinner. One of them returned at 8:42 p.m., but after lingering around the main exit area for about 5-6 minutes, she stepped out again at approximately 8:48 p.m. The two returned together at 9:29 p.m. The female student headed towards the Girls Hostel at around 9:31 p.m.”
According to the college authorities, once the situation became known, the female student was transferred to the hospital for urgent medical attention, and the local police were promptly notified.
“We wish to firmly assert that the institution stands resolutely by the affected student and her companion. We offer them our complete support and are determined to seek justice with utmost diligence. Our primary focuses at this moment are: Ensuring the well-being of the affected student—providing not only medical care but also psychological counselling,” the statement continued.
“Full cooperation with law enforcement—we are committed to supplying all relevant evidence requested by the authorities. Maintaining transparent and responsible communication—while observing legal boundaries and privacy, we will keep students, parents, staff, and the public appropriately informed as the case unfolds,” the authorities added.
“We deeply recognize the severity of this incident, and our hearts go out to the student and her family during this distressing time. We pledge to stand with them and work tirelessly with the authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” the college concluded.
This statement followed an incident where a second-year medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped outside the campus in Durgapur, West Burdwan district.
On Saturday, West Bengal Police detained the friend of the student and are currently questioning him to gather more information regarding the incident. In the meantime, the state health department has requested a report from the private medical college authorities.
According to police reports, the student had exited the campus with a male friend for dinner on Friday night when they were reportedly followed by a group of young men on motorcycles who made inappropriate comments.
The men allegedly chased away the friend, dragged the student into a wooded area behind the campus, and gang-raped her. They also seized her mobile phone and discarded it.
The male friend returned with others from the college and found the injured student on the ground. She was subsequently admitted to a local hospital. Police confirmed she is a resident of Jaleswar, Odisha.
A complaint filed by the college initiated an investigation by the Durgapur New Township Police, yet no arrests have been made thus far.
