Kolkata, Oct 11 (NationPress) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has proactively acknowledged the gang rape of a second-year medical student hailing from Odisha.
The incident occurred outside a private medical institution in Durgapur, located in the West Burdwan district of West Bengal, on Friday night, where the student is currently enrolled.
In response, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has reached out to Rajeev Kumar, the Director General of Police in West Bengal, demanding the prompt apprehension of all suspects, a thorough and transparent inquiry, as well as medical and psychological aid for the survivor.
“To ensure effective oversight, Chairperson Archana Majumdar will travel to Durgapur to meet the survivor and assess police actions. The Commission has requested an ‘Action Taken’ Report within five days,” stated an official NCW communication.
The West Bengal Police has also released a statement advising the public against disseminating any unverified information regarding the case.
“We are profoundly troubled by the sexual assault on a medical student from Odisha in Durgapur. We assure everyone that the offenders will face justice. The anguish of the victim is as much ours as it is Odisha’s, and we will spare no effort in holding the perpetrators accountable,” expressed the police.
The state police further reported that the victim is recuperating well, and her family is receiving comprehensive support.
“We urge the community to refrain from sharing any unverified details related to this incident. The West Bengal Police is steadfast in its zero-tolerance approach toward crimes against women,” they added.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has yet to respond to a social media message from her Odisha counterpart, Mohan Charan Majhi, who called for decisive action against the perpetrators.
However, the Trinamool Congress has released a statement condemning heinous acts like rape and advocating for the strongest legal repercussions, criticizing the Union government for delaying the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill.
The party pointed out that although over a year has passed since the proposal of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill, no substantial action has been taken to turn it into law.
“This is a political choice with grave ramifications,” the party emphasized.
