Bhubaneswar, Oct 11 (NationPress) Odisha's Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has called upon West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take decisive action against the individuals implicated in the alleged gangrape of an Odisha girl who is studying in Durgapur.
In a post on X, Majhi expressed, “The heartbreaking incident of gang rape involving an Odia student in Durgapur, West Bengal, is utterly condemnable and distressing. I am profoundly shocked upon learning this news. In this delicate situation, I strongly urge the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, @MamataOfficial, to implement exemplary measures against the accused in accordance with the law.”
He furthermore stated, “I wish for the victim’s swift recovery. I have instructed senior officials to engage with the West Bengal government and initiate necessary actions. The Odisha government will provide all possible support to the victim’s family.”
The victim, a second-year medical student from Odisha, was reportedly gang-raped outside a private medical college in Durgapur, located in the West Burdwan district, on Friday night.
She had left the campus with a male friend for an evening snack around 8:30 p.m. when a group of young men on motorcycles began to stalk them and make inappropriate comments.
Allegedly, the men chased away her friend, dragged her into a nearby wooded area, and gang-raped her. They also stole her mobile phone and discarded it.
The Durgapur New Township Police have initiated an investigation. While no arrests have been made so far, a friend of the victim has been detained for questioning.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Health Department has requested a report from the authorities of the private medical college. Principal Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam mentioned that the report is anticipated by Sunday morning, after which further actions will be taken.
Deputy Commissioner (East) of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, Abhishek Gupta, stated, “The investigation is in progress. If new information arises, we will communicate it. Given the sensitivity of the matter, the police are proceeding with caution.”
The father of the victim has expressed his wish to bring her back home, saying, “My daughter is not safe here. I will not allow her to continue her education in this state anymore.”
In the meantime, students at the medical college have protested on campus, accusing the authorities of negligence in ensuring security outside the premises. Local CPI(M) activists and BJP leaders have also held demonstrations condemning the incident and demanding justice.
