Kolkata, Oct 13 (NationPress) West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose visited the family of the Durgapur gang-rape victim on Monday and asserted that Bengal is increasingly unsafe for women. After his meeting with the victim's family, he told reporters that a second renaissance is essential for ensuring women's safety in the state.
"This is not an isolated incident. Recently, we have faced similar horrifying events that tarnish Bengal's reputation. The region is known for leading the renaissance of our nation, and we aspire for another one. We must create an environment where the girl child feels secure. Currently, I cannot confidently state that Bengal is safe. We must accept our responsibilities and ensure justice for the victims," said Bose.
The Governor's comments followed the gang-rape of a second-year medical student from Odisha by five men in a forest near a private medical college in Durgapur last Friday. All five suspects have been apprehended based on the victim's report.
Bose described the incident as outrageous and disturbing to the public's conscience.
"It is crucial for society to unite and oppose such heinous acts. We will do everything within our power to achieve justice for the victim's family. I had a conversation with the victim and her parents; our discussions will remain confidential," he added.
