Karur, Sep 28 (NationPress) What was anticipated as a joyous evening turned into a profound tragedy for two young souls in Tamil Nadu's Karur.

Among the 40 individuals who fell victim to the stampede during the political rally of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay on Saturday night were childhood sweethearts and soon-to-be engaged pair, M. Akash (26) and S. Gokulasri (26).

Akash, who worked in IT, and Gokulasri, a guest lecturer at Valluvar College of Science and Management, had plans to get engaged next month and marry in January of the following year.

On that fateful Saturday, the couple, accompanied by Gokulasri's elder brother, Prabhakaran, ventured out to catch a glimpse of Vijay Anna.

After hours of anticipation, chaos erupted when the crowd lost control due to Vijay's late arrival.

"We were on the terrace of a nearby house. When we attempted to descend, the crowd surged forward. My sister advised me to move away since I had recently undergone angioplasty," a heartbroken Prabhakaran recounted.

Within minutes, Akash and Gokulasri found themselves caught in the throng.

"My mother even called at 6 p.m. on Saturday urging us to return, but we insisted on staying," he added, struggling to hold back tears.

Their bodies were returned to their families on Sunday morning after the post-mortem, and their funerals were held later that day.

This calamity has sent shockwaves throughout Tamil Nadu.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who hurried to Karur immediately following the incident, described it as "unprecedented in the state's history."

He declared a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh for each victim's family and initiated an investigation led by retired Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.

Chief Minister Stalin indicated that the inquiry would uncover any oversights and ensure accountability.

Opposition leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami visited mourning families and criticized the DMK-led state government and police for failing to predict the rally's turnout.

"Adequate safety protocols were absent despite awareness of the crowd size," he asserted, advocating for improved crowd management measures.

Actor-politician Vijay, who initially refrained from commenting, later expressed his sorrow on social media, calling the incident "an irreparable loss" and announcing compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the families of each deceased and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.

The TVK Chief urged his supporters to remain strong during this "heart-wrenching moment."

As families like that of Akash and Gokulasri confront their devastating loss, Karur mourns a night where celebration transformed into catastrophe – raising urgent questions about safety at political events.
