Srinagar, June 17 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, emphasized on Tuesday the necessity for a collaborative approach to rejuvenate tourism in Kashmir following the Pahalgam terror attack. He encouraged tourists to not only visit Kashmir once but to return to this unspoiled Valley repeatedly for their holidays.
During an interactive meeting with a delegation from the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) on Tuesday, the Chief Minister acknowledged their ongoing commitment to promote Jammu and Kashmir as a premier tourist location.
The meeting was attended by Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Commissioner Secretary Tourism Yasha Mudgal, Director Tourism Kashmir Raja Yaqoob Farooq, President IATO Ravi Gosain, senior officials, key stakeholders in tourism, and IATO representatives.
“We appreciate IATO for visiting and organizing this engagement, as trust is reciprocal. Your presence reassures us that we are on the right track,” the Chief Minister stated during his address.
Addressing the Pahalgam attack, the Chief Minister remarked, “To call it unfortunate would be an understatement. This incident not only affected 26 families directly but also diminished the confidence of many others. Just as the tourism season was starting to show promise, the downturn by mid-June was quite significant.”
He underscored the resilience of the tourism sector and expressed hope for a resurgence.
“Since the 2022 season, we have witnessed an increase in tourist vehicles. It was uplifting to see Srinagar alive with activity, with taxis loaded with luggage heading to Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and beyond,” he noted.
The Chief Minister further emphasized that the aim is for tourists to visit Kashmir more than once. “We desire for them to return repeatedly. This is why your feedback is vital—for us to enhance the experience, improve infrastructure, and expand the potential for adventure tourism.”
Discussing the development of nine new destinations, the Chief Minister mentioned that the government is collaborating closely with the Government of India to bring these to fruition.
Regarding infrastructure and connectivity, the Chief Minister highlighted the popularity of the new train services to Kashmir and committed to addressing capacity issues with the Ministry of Railways.
“We will consider increasing the length and frequency of train services. It’s about rebuilding confidence—for tourists and for ourselves,” he remarked.
On the potential for adventure tourism, the Chief Minister pointed out new ventures being explored in areas like Betab Valley in Pahalgam and Gulmarg.
“Activities like zip-lining, mountain biking, and summer trekking could transform these locations. We are engaging with national adventure infrastructure providers to bring these concepts to reality.”
He also welcomed IATO’s proposal for a promotional tourism event later this year.
