Jammu, July 14 (NationPress) The newly appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, prominent BJP figure Kavinder Gupta, expressed his commitment on Monday to effectively address the challenges faced by the citizens of the Union Territory.
In a statement to IANS post-appointment, Gupta remarked, “I extend my gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, the Home Minister, and the entire national leadership for this esteemed opportunity. My top priority will be to tackle the issues confronting the people of Ladakh, and I am dedicated to performing my duties with utmost diligence.”
Gupta succeeds BD Mishra as L-G and is a senior BJP leader hailing from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), having previously served as Deputy Chief Minister during Mehbooba Mufti’s administration.
He is notably the first political leader from J&K to assume the role of L-G in Ladakh, a Union Territory established following the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of the former state into two Union Territories—J&K (with a legislative assembly) and Ladakh (without a legislative assembly)—on August 5, 2019.
His appointment follows the denial of a party ticket for the previous year’s Assembly elections in the J&K Union Territory.
Born in 1959, Gupta became a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the age of 13. He was imprisoned for 13 months during the Emergency period and held the position of secretary for the Punjab unit of the Vishva Hindu Parishad from 1978 to 1979.
Gupta led the J&K unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha from 1993 to 1998 and served as Mayor of Jammu city for three consecutive terms between 2005 and 2010.
During the 2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, Gupta contested as a BJP candidate from the Gandhinagar constituency, defeating Congress’s Raman Bhalla. On March 19, 2015, he was elected Speaker of the Assembly, marking the first time a BJP leader held that position.
He was appointed Deputy Chief Minister on April 30, 2018, as part of a cabinet reshuffle, succeeding Nirmal Kumar Singh. However, he resigned from the role on June 19, 2018, after the BJP withdrew from its coalition with the PDP, which led to the end of the government after 51 days.
