Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 25 (NationPress) The former Chief Minister of Kerala and esteemed CPI(M) leader V.S. Achuthanandan has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honor in India, signifying a pivotal moment of national acknowledgment for one of the most significant political figures in the state.

This accolade honors Achuthanandan’s extensive public service, characterized by his unwavering stance on issues such as corruption, land rights, women's rights, environmental protection, and social justice, which have garnered him respect across various political factions.

Having served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011, he was often regarded as the moral barometer of Left politics within the region.

His political journey included leading land reform initiatives and taking decisive action against illegal encroachments and environmental harm, leaving a profound impact on Kerala’s governance and public dialogue.

Even after his retirement from active politics, he continued to symbolize integrity and ideological dedication. The Padma Vibhushan was also awarded posthumously to Justice K.T. Thomas, a former Supreme Court judge, honoring his exceptional contributions to the Indian judiciary.

Justice Thomas was renowned for his keen legal insight and fearless rulings, significantly influencing constitutional interpretation and judicial accountability.

Joining him on the Padma Vibhushan roster from Kerala is P. Narayanan, the former editor of Janmabhumi, recognized for his influential role in journalism and public thought.

In the Padma Bhushan category, Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to Indian cinema.

With a remarkable career spanning over four decades, Mammootty has redefined performance metrics within Malayalam cinema and has brought both national and international acclaim to the industry. Also receiving the Padma Bhushan was Vellapally Natesan, General Secretary of the SNDP Yogam, acknowledged for his contributions to social reform and organizational leadership, continuing the legacy of Sree Narayana Guru.

Numerous distinguished individuals from Kerala were recognized with the Padma Shri. Veteran scientist A.E. Muthunayagam was honored for his groundbreaking work in science and technology.

Acclaimed dance educator Kalamandalam Vimala Menon received the award for her lifelong commitment to classical dance and cultural education. Environmental advocate G. Kollakkal Devaki Amma was also awarded the Padma Shri for her relentless grassroots efforts in environmental preservation.

These honors together underscore Kerala’s lasting contributions to India’s political, cultural, scientific, and social landscape, celebrating lives devoted to public service and national advancement.
