Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 7 (NationPress) For the second consecutive day, the Kerala Assembly experienced a turbulent session as the Congress-led Opposition aimed its criticism at the government regarding the Sabarimala gold plating scandal.
As the House convened, the Leader of Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, brought up the concern, labeling the High Court’s discovery on Monday that gold intended for the Sabarimala sanctum was purportedly stolen and sold for a profit as “bizarre”.
Similar to the previous day, Satheesan insisted on the resignation of Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan, the disbandment of the Devaswom Board, and an official response from the government within the assembly.
In reaction, State Law Minister P. Rajeev accused the Opposition of undermining the High Court's authority. “The government is open to any investigation. However, the Opposition seems reluctant to accept even a probe supervised by the High Court. This is evidently a politically charged maneuver,” he stated.
State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M.B. Rajesh added that the Opposition was displaying signs of frustration after facing legal defeats.
“They fear the judiciary, dread discussions, which is why they are impeding proceedings,” he commented.
When Speaker A.N. Shamseer attempted to move forward with the Question Hour, the Opposition heightened its protest, leading to the adjournment of the one-hour session.
Even after the House was reconvened, the Opposition persisted in its protest, prompting the Speaker to hastily conduct the scheduled business of the day before adjourning the session.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, former Devaswom Board president N. Vasu addressed the issue, asserting that he had no direct involvement with Unnikrishnan Potti, the individual under investigation in this matter.
Vasu clarified that Potti had never solicited his assistance and that significant decisions regarding the temple's doors and gold plating had been made prior to his term.
“I was not in office when the panels were removed. Let the investigation unveil how gold transformed into copper. I possess no knowledge of any misconduct,” he stated.
Vasu also acknowledged receiving an email from Potti. “I find no fault in my actions; the Commissioner was responsible for follow-up,” he maintained, asserting that no complaints or shortages were ever communicated to him.
