Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 9 (NationPress) The Kerala Legislative Assembly experienced yet another tumultuous session on Thursday as the Congress-led Opposition continued its protests regarding the gold plating issue at Sabarimala, disrupting the proceedings for the fourth day in a row.
Intense exchanges between the Treasury and Opposition benches escalated into chaos, leading to a halt in the House's activities again.
Disruption ensued soon after the day's session began when Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan started his address.
Almost immediately, a fierce verbal clash erupted between him and members of the ruling front, prompting the Speaker to step in. Satheesan accused the Speaker of using security staff to stifle the Opposition and raised concerns regarding the Chief Minister’s purported “body shaming” remarks made in the House.
As tensions escalated, Opposition legislators surged to the well of the House displaying banners. The Speaker's order to the security personnel to confiscate the banners only fueled the protest further.
Opposition MLAs continued their demonstration in front of the Speaker’s chair, while the Speaker insisted that banners were not permitted in that area. Ruling party members responded vigorously to the Opposition's claims.
State Minister of Excise M.B. Rajesh accused the Opposition of attacking a female staff member within the Assembly on Wednesday and charged Satheesan with instigating “hooliganism.”
He asserted that the protest was a deliberate attempt to obstruct the Question Hour.
Amidst the protests, the Speaker proceeded with the one-hour-long Question Hour.
Minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar also contributed to the debate, criticizing an INTUC leader’s involvement in the protests, alleging that he had not made any contributions to the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).
Treasury bench MLA K.V. Sumesh labeled the protests over the Sabarimala issue as “anti-democratic,” emphasizing that the High Court had already assigned an SIT to investigate the matter.
With neither side yielding, the House descended into disorder again, with Opposition protests persisting throughout the Question Hour.
However, when the Assembly entered the zero hour, unrest erupted as Opposition legislators attempted to reach the Speaker’s podium, leading to a temporary adjournment of the House. Given the likelihood of further escalation, the Assembly session might be concluded later in the day.
