Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 7 (NationPress) Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced the alignment for the initial phase of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project via his social media on Friday, calling it a significant milestone in transforming the state's capital for future generations.

Vijayan stated, "The Thiruvananthapuram Metro will revolutionize urban transportation and expedite the development of the capital," in his post on X, revealing the project's approval.

This announcement comes just days before the local body elections, where the CPI-M-led LDF government is preparing for a competitive battle for control of the vital Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

The proposed metro route traverses through the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.

The 31-km corridor, which includes 27 stations, will connect essential IT hubs, major transportation terminals, and crucial administrative and healthcare facilities across the city.

The metro line will commence at Pappanamcode and extend through Killippalam, Palayam, Sreekariyam, Kazhakoottam, Technopark, Kochuveli, and the airport, concluding at Inchakkal.

The project will be executed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), which is already managing preliminary infrastructure development in the city.

Previously, the Sreekariyam, Ulloor, and Pattom flyovers were allocated to KMRL for preparatory efforts, with the construction of the Sreekariyam flyover advancing swiftly.

The chief minister noted that the metro system is anticipated to be transformative for the city’s expansion, enhancing connectivity and alleviating traffic congestion while promoting sustainable urban mobility.

Interchange stations planned at Kazhakoottam, Technopark, and Kariavattom will bolster access between significant residential and commercial areas.

Upon completion, the Thiruvananthapuram Metro will link the three phases of Technopark, the international airport, Thampanoor Bus Stand, the railway station, the Secretariat, and the Medical College -- integrating the city’s administrative, business, and transport centers.

Notably, this announcement follows a similar project proposed over a decade ago when former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, after multiple discussions with 'Metroman' E.Sreedharan, had initiated the project, but it never materialized for various reasons.

Point of View

The recent announcement by Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on the Thiruvananthapuram Metro project signifies a forward-thinking approach to urban development. It highlights the importance of enhancing infrastructure in response to growing urban challenges, while also strategically aligning with the political landscape as local elections approach. The project aims to boost connectivity and foster sustainable growth, ensuring that it meets the future needs of the city.
